Dogs and Market Researchers Not Allowed Inside”—this was one particularly memorable message scrawled on a placard outside the entrance to a residential complex in India, which I happened upon doing fieldwork there in the summer of 2011. I had recently joined TNS from working in academia in the US and was conducting face-to-face interviews in an effort to get acquainted with market research and data collection in the country. Upon looking at the questionnaire we were using, I sympathized with the author of the warning sign.
